About Professional Counselors: Professional Counselor : A Professional Counselor is a licensed mental health practitioner trained to help individuals, couples, and groups address emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. They use talk therapy and evidence-based counseling methods to support clients in managing mental health conditions, improving relationships, and developing coping strategies for life’s difficulties. Addiction (Substance Use Disorder (SUD)) Counselor: An Addiction Counselor is a licensed mental health therapist who help individuals struggling with addiction of alcohol, drug, or other substance use disorder. These counselors work with clients by helping them to manage and overcome the psychological, emotional, and behavioral challenges related to substance use. These counselors also work closely with families and support systems to help them better understand their loved one’s illness. SUD counselors help to promote long-term sobriety, emotional stability, and overall mental wellness for both the individual and their family. Mental Health Counselor: A Mental Health Counselor is a licensed professional who helps individuals, couples, and families manage and overcome emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. They assess clients’ mental health conditions and develop personalized treatment plans to provide therapy for a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, stress, grief, and life transitions.
Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. Mental health also includes a person's ability to enjoy life - to attain a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.
Some most common types of mental illness affecting people of United States are bipolar, phobias, dysthymia, depression, anxiety and panic attack, schizophrenia, psychosis, anorexia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) etc. Some strategies or treatments which can be helpful in treating mental illness includes psychotherapy (talking therapies), medication and self-help (reducing alcohol intake, sleeping more, and eating well).
